Colposcopy
A colposcopy is a simple, in-office procedure that allows your provider to closely examine the cervix for abnormal or precancerous cells. It is commonly recommended after an abnormal Pap smear or a positive HPV test to help determine whether additional evaluation or treatment is needed.
At Gemini OBGYN, our providers perform colposcopies using advanced magnification technology to evaluate the cervix in a comfortable, supportive setting. While hearing that you need further testing can feel overwhelming, a colposcopy is an important step in identifying cervical changes early—when they are often the easiest to monitor or treat.
During your appointment, a special instrument called a colposcope remains outside the body while providing a magnified view of the cervix. If an area appears abnormal, your provider may collect a small tissue sample (biopsy) for laboratory evaluation. The procedure typically takes 15 to 30 minutes, and most patients can resume their normal daily activities afterward.
Our team is committed to making the experience as stress-free as possible by explaining each step, answering your questions, and developing a care plan based on your individual results.
Whether you live in Pembroke Pines, Weston, Davie, Miramar, Cooper City, Plantation, Southwest Ranches, or the surrounding Broward County communities, Gemini OBGYN provides compassionate women’s healthcare focused on early detection and long-term cervical health.
Colposcopy FAQs
Why would I need a colposcopy?
A colposcopy is usually recommended if your Pap smear shows abnormal cervical cells, your HPV test is positive for a high-risk strain, or your provider notices changes to the cervix during a pelvic exam. The procedure helps determine whether additional monitoring or treatment is necessary.
Does a colposcopy hurt?
Most patients experience only mild discomfort, similar to a Pap test. If a biopsy is performed, you may feel a brief pinch or cramping sensation. Mild spotting and light cramping afterward are common and usually resolve within a day or two.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Try to schedule your appointment when you are not on your menstrual cycle if possible. Avoid intercourse, vaginal medications, tampons, and douching for 24 to 48 hours before the procedure unless instructed otherwise. Your provider will review any additional preparation instructions with you before your visit.
